Disk Space or Storage space is probably one of the common terminologies that you would have come across in your pursuit to narrow down on a hosting package. Am I right? In this price of article I shall attempt to put some light into these terminologies and what additional things you should know about them.
Web hosting in a very simple term means a box that offers space to your website’s data, and processing power that pushes or retrieves data and control signals to and fro within the internet. When such is the concept, every hosting provider is bound to offer at least these two i.e. space and processing resources. This space is exactly what disk space or storage means.
To help you visualize the whole concept of in more detail, let me get a little deeper under proper headings. Hope it helps. Here we go!
What is disk space or storage in hosting?
The box that we spoke about earlier in this article is nothing but a server or a set of servers. It is in this server your website content and media such as images, pages, video files, data bases etc. reside.
What actually hosting providers and their packages mean when they specify a number against disc space or storage is the amount of space available for you to store your content. Storage also includes space to store your emails and related files, but it need not be the case always. More the disc space better it is for your website.
The available hosting packages these days either have limited or unlimited storage spaces and majorly depends of the kind of hosting too. Shared hosting, where the space is shared across multiple clients either offers limited or unlimited hosting packages, whereas it’s not the case in VPS or dedicated hosting. Here, disk space is limited or fixed per the size of the hard drive installed on the server.
Is Unlimited storage space for real?
If a hosting service provider offers unlimited storage space without any caveat you must certainly go with it. But unlimited is always limited for your website content too is.
Since, most, rather all unlimited storage plans are offered along with Shared hosting, it is important to understand that going unlimited is nearly impossible. If you are hosting data for a different purpose, such as maintaining repository or allowing file sharing etc., such data usually are prohibited by hosting companies.
Hosting companies always monitor their servers and if they feel your data related activities are causing stability issues and causing harm to other client’s websites, you will be notified – and ask you to cut down on data or upgrade to higher packages, ever to VPS or dedicated hosting.
The point that I am making is that – As long as your data is limited and acceptable, your hosting-plan remains ‘Unlimited’. Before keying in your payment details with a hosting provider just check for all the caveats that could affect you in future.
Know your data storage requirement based on what kind of information you would store on the website. Include in your estimate space for emails as well in your hunt for hosting package/s. Also remember, unlimited storage space remain so as long as your website remain limited.
